Pioneering Sustainability in Bioprocessing with Agarose-Based PuraBead®
Published date: 26 January 2024
In the dynamic world of bioprocessing, Astrea Bioseparations has been a trailblazer for decades, consistently delivering high-performance mono-dispersed beads for biopharma separation processes. While their PuraBead® range is well-known for its exceptional performance, what often goes unnoticed is the remarkable sustainability embedded within the supply chain and manufacturing process of these agarose-based beads.
At the heart of Astrea Bioseparations’ PuraBead® range is a supply chain that begins with farmers harvesting sustainably managed seaweed. Seaweed growth absorbs environmental carbon dioxide, improves water quality, biodiversity, and ocean acidification buffering. The seaweed is carefully solar-dried before undergoing a process to transform it into agarose. Astrea Bioseparations utilizes a unique aqueous-based manufacturing process to create it’s PuraBead® range, before making small chemical changes to create the final product. What sets the process apart is not just its efficiency, it’s biopolymer structure allows biodegradability which offers a greener route through manufacturing process compared to other resin competitors.
Over the past two years, Astrea Bioseparations has experienced rapid growth overall, however, the PuraBead® base bead has had proportionally higher growth compared to other product ranges. To meet this demand and continue commitment to sustainability, Astrea Bioseparations has transitioned to a semi-continuous beading process running 24/7. Looking ahead, construction of a new bead manufacturing plant is underway to support the predicted 2024 growth. The plant’s modular design allows for easy expansion, promoting future scalability, and reducing power usage through shared services.
Astrea Bioseparations stands as a beacon in the biopharmaceutical industry, not only for their cutting-edge separation technologies but also for their unwavering commitment to sustainability. Promoting the cultivation of seaweed to manufacture agarose-based products, their practices showcase a harmonious blend of efficiency and environmental responsibility. As they continue to grow and innovate, Astrea Bioseparations sets a compelling example for the industry, proving that sustainability is not just a buzzword but a vital aspect of shaping a greener future for biopharmaceutical processes.
